Part 3 · Reading
Passage
For ten years, Ren served the Aoyama household. He woke before dawn, polished the floors, prepared the meals, and bowed to the young master — a boy his own age named Sota. Ren never complained. He was grateful to have a roof and food. But Ren had a secret: he was the lost prince of a neighboring kingdom. His mother had hidden him as a servant to protect him from assassins. One day, a diplomat visited the household and recognized Ren’s face. “You look exactly like the late king,” he said. The truth spread quickly. The Aoyama family was shocked. Sota stared at Ren and said, “You’ve been serving me all this time? You should have told me.” Ren bowed. “You treated me with kindness. That made me want to stay.” Sota’s eyes filled with tears. “I didn’t treat you kindly because you were a servant. I treated you kindly because you were my friend.” In the final scene, Ren stood at the border of his homeland. He could reclaim his throne. But he looked back at Sota and said, “A crown is heavy. A friendship is light. I choose light.” He stayed. The prince became a servant again — not because he had to, but because he wanted to.

Part 5 · Writing
Write 3–5 sentences about a time when you chose something meaningful over something impressive. Use past tense.
Example: In college, I was offered a high-paying internship at a big company. But I chose to volunteer at a local library instead. My friends thought I was crazy. But the library was where I met people who truly needed help. That summer changed my life more than any internship could. Some choices don’t make sense to others — but they make sense to you.
