原英文: He who knows (the Dao) does not (care to) speak (about it);
逐字意译中文: 那个知(道)的人 不(在意去)言(之道);
说明: “He who knows (the Dao)”对应“知者”;“does not (care to) speak”用“care to”表达“不屑于、不愿”说道的态度。
原英文: he who is (ever ready to) speak about it does not know it.
He (who knows it) will keep his mouth shut and close the portals (of his nostrils).
标准中文: 塞其兑,闭其门;
说明: “keep his mouth shut”为口语习语;“portals of his nostrils”古雅表达,指感官之门(古人视鼻息为主要交流门户)。
原英文: He will blunt his sharp points and unravel the complications of things;
逐字意译中文: 他将 使他的锐点变钝 并且 解开 事物的纷扰;
标准中文: 挫其锐,解其纷;
原英文: he will attemper his brightness, and bring himself into agreement with the obscurity (of others).
This is called ‘the Mysterious Agreement.’
原英文: (Such an one) cannot be treated familiarly or distantly;
逐字意译中文: (这样的人)不能 被对待亲密地 或 疏远地;
标准中文: 不可得而亲,不可得而疏;
原英文: he is beyond all consideration of profit or injury;
逐字意译中文: 他 超越 所有 对利益或伤害 的考量;
标准中文: 不可得而利,不可得而害;
说明: “beyond all consideration of”表达完全不受利害左右。
原英文: beyond all consideration of nobility or meanness:
原英文: - he is the noblest man under heaven.
Those who really get the Dao don’t feel the need to talk about it.
The ones who can’t stop talking about it probably don’t get it at all.
If you truly understand it, you keep quiet and shut down your senses.
You tone down your sharpness, untangle life’s messes, dim your own light a bit, and blend in with everyone else’s ordinary dust.
That’s what we call “mysterious oneness” – or just profound unity.
A person like that can’t be pulled closer or pushed away.
You can’t sway them with rewards or scare them with threats.
You can’t put them on a pedestal or look down on them.
That’s why, in the end, they’re the most respected person in the world.
People who truly understand the Dao don’t go around bragging about it.
The ones who never shut up about it? Yeah, they don’t really get it.
Someone who gets it stays quiet, closes off the chatter, and just chills.
They don’t show off how sharp they are, they smooth out drama, don’t blind people with their brilliance, and just blend in with the crowd.
That’s called being in that deep, mysterious flow where everything’s one.
You can’t get super close to someone like that, and you can’t keep them at arm’s length either.
Good stuff doesn’t tempt them, bad stuff doesn’t faze them.
They’re not impressed by status, and they don’t feel inferior to anyone.
That’s exactly why everybody respects them the most – they’re above all that noise.
